Case Study : Vent Du Nord - Trevor Maughan
Trevor Maughan aged 60 from Tow Law became redundant in 2006. He always dreamt of buying a boat in France and making money out of it with his business partner Martin Pedler. Coming from somewhat diverse working backgrounds in coal processing and marine contracting, they found that the leisurely cruising of the rivers and canals in Burgundy to be an activity both shared in common.
Trevor spotted a leaflet about Be Enterprising at his local community centre in Tow Law, where he resides, and contacted Michael Scott, Be Enterprising coach based in Wear Valley to find out more. From start to finish, there were about seven meetings, numerous telephone conversations and emails to find out how he could make a living from his boat.
Michael Smith said: “This was an extremely unusual business idea and one that came to fruition in a relatively short space of time as the client was very committed and motivated to making it work.”
Trevor and Martin decided to set up a luxury boating holiday business called Vent du Nord which will be launched in 2009.
Trevor said: “As more people face redundancy during the economic downturn, I would encourage people to follow their dreams. Providing that people are aware of the pros and cons of setting up their own business, there is no reason why they shouldn’t be encouraged, especially during the credit crunch.
“If someone has a business start-up idea, they should get in touch with Be Enterprising who will help them every step of the way. I was really pleased with the guidance I got.”
Michael added: “During the economic downturn, the advice and guidance stays very much the same. I always try to open clients’ eyes to everything good and bad to make sure they are aware of what might happen. However, many good businesses are born in tough times and there is still a belief that if you want something to succeed it will. My philosophy – a calm sea never made an experienced nor successful sailor.”
Michael added, “Trevor’s positive attitude during a difficult time was really encouraging, both from our perspective and for Trevor to reach his goal. It shows that anything is possible.”
